Destinations & Itineraries

Here we have a selection of our favourites:

Cyclades - Serifos, Kithnos, Kea, Siros, Naxos, Mykonos
North Ionian - Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Erikoussa
South Ionian - Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Ithaca
Balearics - Mallorca & Menorca
Auckland's Hauraki Gulf - Waiheke, Coromandel, Great Barrier, Kawau
Bay of Islands - Russell, Paihia, Whangaroa, Mangonui, Otehei Bay

These route diagrams were composed using the automatic route-plotting feature at every sailor's favourite webpage, the Navionics Chart Viewer Webapp.
Cyclades, 185NM: Lavrion - Livadhi (46NM) - Paros (42NM) - Mykonos (23NM) - Ermoupolis (19NM) - Loutra (30NM) - Lavrion (26NM).
  • If chartering ex Pireaus/Kalamaki/Gouvia (not Lavrion), add 28-30NM to your first & last day. Depart early on Sunday for must-see Loutra (51NM), then stop in Coressia on Kea on Thursday night to save yourself 2 hours travel on Friday.
  • A bar extends a long way East from near the southern end of Makronisos.
  • Consider bypassing Mykonos (tourist trap town, and distant new harbour has limited facilities & little Meltemi shelter) for a rest day in lovely Ermoupolis.
  • See the area in the Navionics Webapp.

North Ionian, 183/175 NM:  Gouvia – Parga (35.4NM) – Lefkas (31.1 NM) – Gaios (34.7NM) – Alipa (37.6NM) – Erikkoussa / Kassiopi (15.6 / 24.4NM) – Gouvia (28.7 / 11.9NM)
  • This route can start & end at Lefkas, Prevesa or Nydri, using Aktion Airport (PVK) instead of Corfu (CFU).
  • Consider a rest day in Gaios, particularly as its night life is open very late, is handy to Parga and Anti-Paxos!
  • Erikkousa has a new marina with plenty of berths, a quieter night life, and good anchoring in the bay outside if there marina were ever full. Alternatively, Kassiopi has plenty of night life, sets you up better for a short trip back to Gouvia (avoid the 3pm-5pm fuel station log jam) and allows you more time to stop off in Kalami and nearby bays for lunch.
  • See the area in the Navionics Webapp.

South Ionian, 203NM: Lefkas – Poros (41.6NM) – via ShipWreck Bay (lunch, @ 22NM) to Zakynthos (45NM) – Argostoli (35.7NM) – Assos/Fiskardo (28.1/37.4NM) – Vathy (14.9)- Lefkas (30.1).
  • Add 13 NM if going round the south end of Zakynthos.
  • Stop at the beautiful bay of Assos if you can (anchorage, and stern-to for 2-3 yachts south side of mole by the lamp-post) or continue on to try for Fiskardo, withSivota (on Lefkada Island) as a back up.
  • Consider a rest day in Argostoli – it’s within 2 days of Lefkas and the night life is open very late! Vathy's bars are also open late.
  • The route can start & end at Lefkas, Prevesa or Nydri, using Aktion Airport (PVK), or at Argostoli using Kefalonia Airport (EFL). There is no chartering from Zakynthos yet.
  • See the area in the Navionics Webapp.

Balearics (Mallorca & Menorca), 236.1NM: Palma – Cala D’Or (39.5NM) – Mahon (63.4NM) – Ciutadella (34.7NM) – Puerto de Soller (56NM) – Palma (42.5NM).
  • To reduce the 2nd leg, go further than Cala D’Or / PortoColom on your 1st day (Porto Cristo is ½ way).
  • Consider a Menorca rest day in Mahon or Ciutadella.
  • On the half day 3rd leg, consider stopping in the bays before Artrutx (Galdana has restaurants, we liked Marcarella), or going round the north side of Menorca and stopping at Fornells for lunch (add 8.2NM).
  • You must leave early if you wish to have lunch at Pollenca (add 15NM) on the 4th leg. Cala Sant Vincenc, 21NM short of Soller, is the same distance from Menorca but with no extra miles cruised.
  • Be on permanent lookout for jellyfish when swimming – even with offshore winds.
  • See the area in the Navionics Webapp.

Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf, 178.7NM: Westhaven – Man O’ War Bay (27.6NM) – Coromandel (18.3NM) – Port Fitzoy (51NM) – Mansion House Bay (37.1NM) – Oneroa (27.7NM) – Westhaven (17.1NM)
  • To break up the 3rd leg, stop ½ way at Port Jackson (or Stoney Bay for Westerlies), or at Tryphena (or Whangaparapara) leaving 3 (or 2) hours to Port Fitzroy the next day and the rest for exploring.
  • It’s worth taking a day (or 2 half days) to rest or explore Great Barrier Island or Waiheke Island.
  • You’ll see most of Kawau Island sailing round it, arriving from the east and leaving southward, but ensure you take an evening walk from Mansion House Bay.
  • The Coromandel Peninsula is so large you need to drive down from Auckland to explore it.
  • See the area in the Navionics Webapp.

Bay of Islands, Whangaroa, Mangonui, 123.9NM: Opua - Otehei Bay (10.8NM) – Whangaroa (32.6NM) - Mangonui (20.8NM) – Totara North (20.7NM) – Russell (34.4NM) – via Paihia for lunch (@ 2NM), Opua (5NM).
  • Consider stopping to explore Russell on the way out to Otehei Bay, and addinga visit up the Kerikeri estuary (if you have the draft clearance) on Thursday night. This adds 8.8NM to your pre-lunch cruise to Paihia on Friday.
  • Instead of Mangonui, consider Taipa Bay if the weather allows.
  • See the area in the Navionics Webapp.
